After A Madea Family Funeral was thought to be the end of Madea, Tyler Perry will revive the beloved character for a Netflix film, A Madea Homecoming.

Tyler Perry’s Madea is returning for a new Netflix movie titled A Madea Homecoming. Perry originally created the famous character based on his own mother and aunt. Depicted as a tough, elderly Black woman and portrayed by Perry, Madea made her first appearance in the 1999 stage play, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, before appearing in 10 more plays by Perry, as well as various TV shows and even a book. However, Madea is most well-known for her appearances in Perry’s films based on those plays.

Since her screen debut in 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea has appeared in 11 live-action films, grossing more than $1 billion at the North American box office. Films in Perry’s popular series include Madea’s Family Reunion, Madea Goes to Jail, Madea’s Big Happy Family, and A Madea Christmas, all of which are based on prior plays. Though they are often panned by critics, nearly every film in the franchise has been a profitable venture for Lionsgate. A Madea Family Funeral, which grossed $75 million during its domestic run, was thought to be the last film in the franchise, but it turns out Perry is not ready to say goodbye to Madea quite yet.

Tyler Perry’s iconic character will be returning for a 12th installment on Netflix titled, A Madea Homecoming. According to THR, the project will begin production at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta ahead of its debut on streaming service sometime in 2022. Perry has written, directed, produced, and acted in every live-action Madea movie, and Netflix’s Madea Homecoming will be no different. Watch Perry make the announcement in character below:

With A Madea Homecoming, Perry will continue to build upon his relationship with Netflix. Perry wrote and directed the thriller, A Fall from Grace, for the streamer last year, which was streamed by over 39 million households. Riding off this success, Perry will also be making the drama, A Jazzman’s Blues, for Netflix.

The Madea brand has been very successful on the stage and screen for two decades, so it’s no surprise that a 12th installment was ordered by Netflix. The only question was whether Perry would be interested after previously saying he was getting too old for the role and wanted to do something different. It’s unclear what caused Perry to change his mind, but Madea fans are likely ecstatic to hear the news of her return. If A Madea Homecoming proves to be a success, the franchise will likely see more Madea installments on Netflix in the future.
